Ashurst Lake is a medium size lake located about 22 miles southeast of Flagstaff in the Coconino National Forest. It generally holds water during long dry periods. Ashurst is a scenic lake with great views of the San Francisco Peaks. At about 7,000 foot elevation, the area has four distinct seasons. The temperatures are cool and refreshing in the spring through the summer into early October. See Flagstaff Weather.

Surface area of the lake is 229 acres with an average depth of about 12 feet when full. Boat launches are available but the lake is limited to 10 horsepower motors.

Ashurst and Forked Pine Campgrounds

Lake Ashurst features two different campgrounds with one host. Each campground has 25 camping sites. Ashurst Lake Campground is on the west side of the lake and its more dense pine trees provide more shade. Forked Pine Campground is on the lake's east side and features better views of San Francisco Peaks. Camping is only permitted in those camp grounds and no where else within a one-mile radius of the campgrounds.

The single-unit campsites each have tables, fire rings and cooking grills. Drinking water and vault toilets are available at each of the two camp grounds.

  • Tents and motor homes and trailers up to 35 feet are permitted.
  • No utility hookups.
  • Pets must always be restrained or on a leash.
  • No horses allowed in the campground.
  • Motorbikes may only be used for entering or leaving campsite.
  • 14 day stay limit.

Fees do apply. As of December, 2011, fees were $16 per night for one vehicle up to 8 people. Second vehicle per night is $8. Campgrounds are available for Picnic/day use (10 a.m to 4 p.m.) for a fee of $8.00 up to 5 people. Please call and verify fees which are subject to change without notice.

Campground Season. The hosted season is from early May through mid-October. It is first-come, first-serve. No reservations. During the off-season, the campgrounds are still open to the public, but there is no drinking water and the only toilet during the off-season is near the boat launch.

Fishing at Ashurst. The lake is regularly stocked during the summer with rainbow and brook trout. Lunker Northern Pike also populates this lake and the the Arizona Game and Fish Department encourages anglers to catch and keep the pike. There is no limit on pike. Arizona fishing license guidelines apply.
